Omaha, NE – Karen Abrams has been named the new Executive Director of Survivors Rising.

Survivors Rising is a working group dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for survivors of sex trafficking, sexual exploitation, sexual assault, domestic/dating violence and stalking. Our mission is to advocate and empower survivors and ensure the survivor voice is represented in prevention, policy, service provision and offender accountability. We are committed to working with survivors to provide hope and tools for healing and to providing survivor engagement in all aspects of our communities.

Survivors Rising is excited to announce Karen Abrams as our Executive Director. Karen was selected by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors and will be the organizations first full-time formal Executive Director. “We continue to be grateful and excited about the support from the community for Survivors Rising since its inception,” stated Kasey Ripperger, Survivors Rising Board President. “Being able to bring the caliber of a leader such as Karen Abrams to Survivors Rising shows immense opportunity for the organizations future. Ms. Abrams comes to us with deep local, regional, and national connections, and we look forward to her leveraging those connections to foster partnerships, craft research-based policy, and create opportunities for civic and community engagement.”

Ms. Abrams’s is a seasoned nonprofit professional, and most recently was interim executive director for a national nonprofit, States United to Prevent Gun Violence. Professionally, she also has many years experiences as a public health and strategic planning consultant. She has committed her professional career and many years of volunteer activism to making the world a better place—a better place safe from the devastation and trauma caused by violence and abuse. A better place where those harms can be prevented by building relationships, telling stories, and implementing common sense, evidence-based, public health approaches.

We are confident that Ms. Abrams’s experiences will advance the organizations strategic plan and guide us into a future which incorporates the survivor voice. Abrams shared,

“Survivors Rising is at the beginning of an exciting journey. I look forward to sharing my ideas on organizational development and program planning. Of course, everything depends on the needs and wants of survivors.”

Abrams has a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Administration. She has extensive training in leadership development, oral and written communications strategies, community engagement, and cultural dynamics.
